Umami analytics

This website uses Umami Cloud to understand, in aggregate, how visitors use the site and which academic materials are useful.

Umami stores pseudonymous, cookie-free event data including page views, referrers, page titles and URL paths, browser and operating-system categories, device type, screen dimensions, language, approximate location, and visit metrics. It associates events within a session using a rotating hash derived from data including the visitor’s IP address and user agent, the hostname, and this website’s ID. The raw IP address is also used to derive approximate location but is not stored, and the session is not linked to a name or email address.

This site also counts downloads and clicks to external websites using the same anonymous context. The only custom properties added to these events are the public filename for a download and, for an external destination, its hostname.

The Umami configuration:

  • does not use analytics cookies;
  • omits URL query strings and fragments;
  • does not send analytics events when the browser’s Do Not Track setting is enabled;
  • does not assign a custom visitor identifier; and
  • does not use session recordings or heatmaps.

These pseudonymous events and sessions are used to produce aggregate reports. Umami Cloud’s Hobby plan currently retains analytics data for up to six months. See Umami’s privacy FAQ and privacy policy for more information.

Visitor map

This website also uses a MapMyVisitors widget to display a geographic visitor map. The widget is visible on the Others page and loads invisibly on the home page so that the existing map continues recording site visits. When it loads, MapMyVisitors receives and stores the visitor’s IP address, approximate country, city, latitude and longitude, postal code, browser and device information, the visited page and referrer, the visit date and time, and a session identifier. Its provider states that visitor data is retained while the website owner’s account remains active and that aggregate statistics may be retained indefinitely.

MapMyVisitors processes this information separately from Umami. Its policy states that consent may be required before loading the widget in jurisdictions subject to ePrivacy or similar laws. See the MapMyVisitors privacy policy for details and information about privacy rights.

Questions about this site’s analytics can be sent to the email address listed on the About page.
